PMA2020 uses innovative mobile technology to support low-cost, rapid-turnaround surveys to monitor key indicators for family planning. PMA2020 disseminated the survey results on family planning and Abortion in Nigeria from the 2018 round of data collected between April and May 2018. The key findings are
Survey results on Family Planning show that in Nigeria,
27.6% of married women and 24.2% percent of all women are using at least one method of contraception (CPR).
19% of married women and 17.6% of all women are using at least one method of modern contraception (mCPR).
22.6% of married women and 16.6% of all women have an unmet need for family planning services.
37.9% of married women and 43.1% of all women said that their demand for modern contraception was met.
Key message: In comparison with previous surveys conducted by PMA20202, FP uptake of modern contraceptive methods by married women in Nigeria increased from 15% to 19%
Key findings from the analysis of abortion in Nigeria:
The most recent data produced by PMA2020 shows that in 2017, the annual incidence of likely abortions in Nigeria was 41.8 per 1,000 women age 15-49 accounting for nearly 1.8 million abortions. When including information related to the experience of respondents’ closest confidantes, the number of likely abortions in Nigeria rose to 2.7 million. This confirms a previous study by Guttmacher Institute in 2015.
More than 6 out of 10 abortions were considered least safe, and 11% of women experienced complications for which they sought post-abortion care at a health facility.
Women living in rural areas, women with no education and women who are poor were the most likely to have the least safe abortions.
In Nigeria, most public tertiary facilities provided post-abortion care (92%) and safe abortion services to save a woman’s life (81%); lower level public facilities and private facilities were much less likely to do so.
Follow-up
State-level disseminations will be conducted in Anambra, Kaduna, Kano, Nasarawa, Lagos, Rivers and Taraba starting the week of September 24 in each respective state.
Additional analysis will be conducted to assess the correlations between FP uptake and abortion as it relates to reproductive health needs and access.
