Having worked for UNAIDS in Nigeria for four years and understanding the HIV/AIDS Epidemic in that West African Country, I have no doubt that Nigeria can achieve the 90-90-90 targets and eliminate mother -to-child transmission of HIV by 2020. On 1st December 2016 during the World AIDS Day Celebrations His Excellency President Buhari has launched a Fast Track plan with a “test and treat policy” which has all the key elements to success with the geographic and population focus and this plan is being implemented by NACA and NASCP with the support of all partners and will lead to the country’s success. Nigeria’s leadership has already started to use the “go to fish where the fishes are” and all its partners are following bu investing where the HIV/AIDS epidemic bites the most i.e. in most affected LGAs and most-affected people in these most-affected LGAs and also to increase efficiency and to integrate HIV interventions in some key public health programmes and essential recurrent events e.g. testing pregnant women, women in child bearing age and children during MNCH weeks this has allowed to reach more people with HIV testing and referral of the one found HIV+ with index tracing at a very low cost. With more than 1 million PLHIV on ART, the efficient opportunities of MNCH weeks and the location population approach being used there is no doubt in mind that with that kind of focus Nigeria will achieve the 90-90-90 and EMTCT targets by 2020.
